Q

Dear Wedding Women:

I am getting married next week. I have a slim-fitting -- though not form-fitting -- gown, just enough to show off my figure. I am worried about any unsightly "rolls" showing. I am a slender person with an hourglass figure. Any good suggestions on how to hid my gut? I can't wear anything that will show in back because the back of my dress is covered in lace, so it's easily seen through.

Dear issacsmom:

You'll look just gorgeous in your dress. After all, have you ever seen a bride who didn't? So resolve not to spend the big day sucking in your gut and worrying about your figure.

That said, if there's a lingerie section in your local department store or a good lingerie store in your neighborhood, it's worth it to consult the salespeople for their opinions. Most places will even allow you to buy undergarments, try them on with your dress at home and then return what you can't use.

Bustiers are a particularly popular option with brides. They cinch the waist, flatten the belly, keep the chest shapely and firmly in place -- and are available with low-cut backs. Or take a hint from New York City fashion editors: Get yourself a body-slimming undergarment such as BodySlimmers by Nancy Ganz. From full bodysuits to panties with a reinforced front panel, they're the easiest (and most discreet) way to ensure your dress will lie flat throughout your big day. The best part: Despite their utilitarian intent, most still look incredibly sexy.

A less-restricting option is to simply wear a full-body slip, if the cut of your dress will allow it. By putting a thin, slick material between your body and your dress, you'll create that smooth illusion you're looking for. Also, look for pantyhose with a bikini (as opposed to a brief) panty built right in. That will eliminate that line around the waist that so often (sigh!) occurs with everyday hose. A garter and stockings will have the same effect.

If your dress is lined (and many wedding dresses are), that will also cut down on the amount of "bulge" that shows through. And many of the materials used to make wedding dresses do a good job of keeping their shape and not creasing with the folds of your skin, despite all-day wear.

Finally, you can also control the size of your belly to some extent by staying away from salty foods this week. The sodium can cause you to retain water and get bloated.
