The Today show continued a 10-year tradition today by throwing a fabulous wedding on Rockefeller Plaza for one lucky couple. This year, Leigh and Nick from Texas wed in a vineyard-inspired ceremony before heading over to New York's famous Plaza Hotel for the reception. We chatted with Today show style editor Bobbie Thomas, who shared some of the fuss-free ideas and inspirations that helped make Leigh and Nick's wedding such a success.
1. Let the Setting Shape the Theme: Can't figure out whether you want your wedding style to be super-slick or super-homey? Choose the setting first, says Thomas. If your heart's set on getting married in the field of wildflowers behind your house, go for floral and let that theme rule the whole day. If the reception is in a sleek, modern hotel, go minimal. It all depends on the place—and how you see it.
2. Blend in the Trends: "Your prom should be time-stamped. Your wedding should be timeless," says Thomas. If you've fallen in love with a trendy dress style or color that's destined to disappear in six months, you can still include it in your wedding. "Take a trend or a piece of a trend," says Thomas, "and do a traditional take on it." The guys in Leigh and Nick's wedding party, for example, were formally suited up, but they wore light suits instead of dark--perfect for a sophisticated outdoor wedding.
3. Break the Rules: Black dresses for a day wedding? You bet. The dress that looked great on everyone in Leigh's bridal party—and that everyone loved—was a classic LBD in a wraparound style. "Black and white is such a trend right now," says Thomas. "It's sophisticated. Your bridesmaids can wear black. Or even white!"
4. Inexpensive Doesn't Always Look That Way: Your bridal party doesn't need to march down the aisle in Jimmy Choos to look great. (And we're sure your bridesmaids' wallets will appreciate it, too.) The platinum-dyed shoes that added a splash of summer to those black bridesmaid dresses were by Leila Rose for Payless. They cost $50 and are available in 64 dye colors.
5. Be Your Own Bride Guide: Thomas says the first thing women ask after they get engaged is "What am I supposed to do?" There are no supposed-tos, she says. Create a wedding that's reflective of your personality and what you love. "It's your fantasy!"
