Dear Ms Demeanor,
My wedding and reception and being held in the private home of friends. Can you suggest a gift to say "thank you" to this very special family? --aemidy
Dear aemidy,
The first thing to remember is to leave the house in better shape than you found it.
You might send them a case of wine and some wonderful flowers. You might also consider individual gifts that reflect each of their tastes, like books. Or you might plan a Thanksgiving surprise during the holidays and have Friday's meal catered and brought over to give the mom a break. Sometimes surprises are the best. And of course, give them a wedding photo in a silver frame as a memento.
Make sure that the day after the wedding, you and your husband call to say how wonderful the wedding was, and how it meant so much because of them. Better still, write a letter together, mentioning all the special things about the wedding, and send it FedEx so they get it as soon as possible. Don't wait until you get home. (Remember the Japanese adage, "He who thanks promptly, thanks twice.")
And congratulations and best wishes to you!
